Microluma FAQ

Everything you need to know about our AI‑powered digital microscopy platform

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is Microluma?

Microluma is a hardware and software platform that turns any existing optical microscope into a connected, AI‑assisted imaging device for faster, more accurate diagnostics and research. We don't sell microscopes; we transform the ones you already have.

By combining a universal microscope adapter, high‑quality imaging process, and AI cloud-based models, Microluma helps scientists move from manual sample review to real‑time connected, digital analysis.

What problems does Microluma solve?

Our goal is to level the playing field so that high‑quality digital microscopy and decision support are accessible in both well‑resourced centers and underserved settings.

Traditional analog microscopy workflows can be slow, dependent on individual expertise, and difficult to scale or standardize.

Microluma helps reduce time from sample to decision, improves consistency in image review, and makes it easier to collaborate, document, and audit cases across teams and locations.

What types of microscopes are compatible?

Microluma device is designed to work with most common laboratory and clinical microscopes both vintage and modern using standard eyepiece dimensions.

The adapter preserves your existing optics and mechanics, meaning you can upgrade to digital and AI‑assisted workflows without replacing your current microscope fleet

How does it work in a day-to-day setting?

The device attaches easily to the eyepiece or the photo port of your standard microscope. What you see through the lens is instantly converted into a high-resolution digital image. From there, the system allows you to take measurements, perform complex image processing, use AI-guided diagnostics, and share findings with colleagues or databases immediately.

Why do we say Microluma is part of the Circular Economy?

This is our commitment to sustainability. Instead of discarding high-quality older microscopes to buy expensive, closed digital systems, we give them "intelligent eyes".

  • Real Sustainability: We extend the lifespan of high-quality equipment already present in labs, drastically reducing technological waste.

  • Economic Efficiency: We leverage the investment you’ve already made in your microscope fleet, bringing them to the technological forefront for a fraction of the cost of new equipment.

Compatibility: Universal and without technical barriers

Our priority is for Microluma to work without complications.

  • Universal: It is designed to work with clinical, petrographic, metallographic, or laboratory microscopes, whether they are vintage or modern models.

  • Independent of dedicated hardware: You don’t need specific computer set-up or expensive graphics cards. We have optimized the software to work perfectly using common web browsers running over practically any computer manufactured in last 10 or 15 years.

No drivers or complex installations: The system is designed to be "plug & play". No software installation in your computer. We want technology to be a help, not a barrier.

What role does Artificial Intelligence play?

AI acts as an expert companion that speeds up the heavy lifting. It can count cells, detect parasites, recognize minerals, or identify foundry errors in metals. The system highlights critical points so that you, as the professional, can make the final decision with greater confidence and speed.

Speed and Connectivity: The best of both worlds

We operate on a hybrid model. Primary processing happens locally, so you get results in seconds on your computer, even without the internet. When a connection is available, you can sync with our secure cloud to collaborate with remote experts, use AI, and create backups

Can Microluma be used in remote or low-resource environments?

Yes. Because Microluma upgrades existing microscopes and emphasizes local processing, it is well suited for resource‑constrained environments where connectivity or capital budgets are limited. It can generate its own WiFi for this set-up.

The solution is designed to minimize dependency on constant connectivity, so core functionality remains available offline with synchronization happening opportunistically when a connection is present, allowing remote experts to review images, provide second opinions, and support training without moving physical slides.

Security and Privacy

We take the protection of your information with the utmost seriousness. We are currently working to align our processes with the strictest international data privacy standards (such as GDPR and HIPAA) to ensure your digital workflow is as secure as your analog one.

Microluma uses a local‑first design: images and metadata are stored on the device and can be synchronized to a secure cloud environment when connectivity is available. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, with access to Microluma device and Microluma cloud accounts protected with double factor authentication.

Is it difficult to learn?

Not at all. It is designed by and for microscopy users. If you know how to operate your microscope, you will know how to use Microluma in a matter of minutes. Implementation does not interrupt your routine; it simply enhances it.

How do we get started or request a demo?

You can reach out through the contact form on the Microluma website to request a demo, discuss your specific workflow, or explore pilot partnerships.

We’ll work with you to understand your microscopes, sample volumes, connectivity constraints, and regulatory context so we can propose an appropriate configuration and rollout plan.
